Greene County releases its broadband survey

Jun 02, 2021 6:15 am

Melanie Lekocevic reports for Columbia-Greene Media that Greene County officials have launched a survey to identify where broadband service is available and where it is not. The Greene County New York Broadband Availability and Adoption Initiative intends to map the county and collect data on where high-speed internet service is accessible. “The Greene County Legislature previously partnered with local internet providers who received more than $18 million in state grant funding through the three-year New York State Broadband Program with a total investment of $25 million,” Greene County Legislature Chair Patrick Linger said. Funds were awarded to Hughes Network Systems, Mid-Hudson Data Corp, MTC Cable, and State Telephone Company. The survey launched this week by the county seeks to identify the gaps in service that remain. Those without an internet connection are being asked to take the survey only; those with a connection are able to take the survey as well as a speed test to demonstrate how fast their existing service is. The survey is open to both residents and business owners. “We know we have gaps, a lack of options and not enough competition in the market, and fixing this is essential to our economic recovery,” Greene County Administrator Shaun Groden said. The survey can be accessed at GreeneBroadband [dot] com. Paper surveys can be obtained by calling 518-719-3270 or by emailing planning [at] discovergreene [dot] com. The survey will be available through August 31. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
