Workers can take time from work to vote
Matthew Hamilton is reporting in the Times Union that state law gives New Yorkers time off from work to vote, but employees must begin notifying their employer of their intent to do so soon. Anyone who needs the time off must notify their employer no more than 10 working days, and no less than two working days, before the election. For anyone who works a Monday to Friday shift, the working-days clock begins Wed., Oct. 25. The law applies to those who do not have four consecutive hours either between the opening of the polls and when they are due at work, or following the end of their work day and the close of the polls. The time off must come at the beginning or the end of a shift or work day. For the Nov. 7 general election, polls open statewide at 6 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. Read the full story in the Times Union.
