Gay marriage vote rises as test in local G.O.P. race

Thomas Kaplan writes in The New York Times on the primary fight facing State Senator Roy McDonald in the 43rd Senate District, Thursday. The newly drawn 43rd includes Columbia, Rensselaer and parts of Saratoga and Washington counties. McDonald, who Kaplan describes as a blunt-spoken son of the old mill city of Troy, has held elected office for more than three decades. But even in a year in which economic issues are dominating many local and national campaigns, McDonald, 65, is having a hard time making job development the subject of his re-election bid. Instead, his campaign has become a referendum on a single decision: His choice to cast one of the key votes that made same-sex marriage legal in New York last year. McDonald’s challenger, Kathleen Marchione, the Saratoga County clerk, is accusing McDonald of deceiving the voters who elected him by changing his position on same-sex marriage, which he opposed in the past.
