Common Council to vote on increased parking fines, boot removal fees

May 14, 2018 5:30 am
Amanda Purcell is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Hudson Common Council will vote on two items related to city parking issues at its meeting May 15. On the agenda, a proposed local law to change the city code and increase fines for parking meter violations from $8 to $10, and a resolution to raise the motor vehicle removal fee from $110 to $150. Under city law, vehicle owners with three or more outstanding parking tickets totaling more than 45 days old are eligible to be booted, or to have another security device attached to immobilize their vehicle. The owner must pay a fee for the boot to be removed. Vehicle booting in the city was suspended in 2016, but the police department is hoping to bring it back this month, said 1st Ward Alderman Kamal Johnson, chairman of the Police Committee. The increased cost of the purchase, attachment and removal of vehicle boots by towing companies was the reason for the increase, Chief L. Edward Moore said April 30 at a Police Committee meeting. “It was set at $110 and has not been increased in seven years,” Moore said. “The tow operators cited increasing operational costs, hence the request.” A portion of the fee assessed goes to the city, with the remainder paid to the town truck drivers. The proposed increase is going to the tow companies, Council president Tom DePietro said. Ed. note: DePietro is an active WGXC programmer. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
