Route 23A parking lot at Kaaterskill Falls closed
Rick Karlin is reporting for the Times Union the Route 23A parking lot for visitors to Kaaterskill Falls is closed and anyone who parks near there will be ticketed and towed, according to Greene County Tourism. The new policy, which impacts the old Molly Smith parking area above the trailhead for the falls, went into effect last summer in an effort to enhance safety. The most recent death at the falls occurred earlier this month when divers found the body of a 36-year-old Yonkers man in the water below the falls. The state Department of Conservation in 2017 completed a viewing area at the top of the falls, accessed from other roads, reachable by a shorter, more manageable walking trail. People are still able to take a trail to the bottom of the falls from there. The 260-foot falls is one of the Catskills best known features, drawing an estimated 100,000 visitors per year. It was painted in the 19th century by Thomas Cole and by many other artists over the years. Read the full story in the Times Union.
