DOCCS announces tablet computer program

Feb 01, 2018 7:15 am

Chris Carola is reporting for the Associated Press New York announced January 31, it will distribute tablet computers to those incarcerated in state prisons in an effort to make communication with family members easier and to boost educational opportunities. The state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said approximately 51,000 people in 54 prisons will be eligible to receive the tablets at no cost to taxpayers. The tablets will come preloaded with educational material, DOCCS officials said. Users will not be able to access the internet, but they can use the tablets to purchase music, e-books and videos through an electronic account system being set up. The tablets also can be used to send and receive emails to and from approved family members and friends, to order items from the commissary, and to file grievances. Officials said they expect to start distributing the tablets later this year. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
