Ulster election set for April 30

Feb 27, 2019 12:33 am
The Mid-Hudson News Network reports that the special election to choose a county executive for the remainder of the year in Ulster County will be held April 30. The Ulster County Legislature set the date Feb. 26 for the special election to replace Michael Hein as the county's top official. Hein left the post in January to become acting commissioner of the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. Pat Ryan was named by Democrats as their candidate last week; Republicans have yet to announce an opponent. Some Republicans didn't want to spend $350,000 on a special election. “For the person that is going to be elected with no opposition for the next seven months, it’s costing the taxpayers $50,000 a month for having someone fill that position at this point,” Republican Legislator Richard Gerentine said. Former Chief of Staff Adele Reiter is acting county executive. If whoever wins the special election wants a full term, they will have to run again in November.
