Bill would increase transparency in Albany

Despite leaders of both legislative chambers from both parties being indicted in corruption charges in the past year, little has been done in Albany to improve transparency or ethics this year. Matthew Hamilton in Capitol Confidential reports that this week a few legislators took a small step to changing that, introducing legislation that would require the state Department of Transportation to publicly release capital plans and project lists prior to passing in the state budget. Citizens, under the bill, could actually find out what lawmakers were going to vote on before they vote. Currently, the state is waiting for the list of DOT projects that will be funded with some of the $25.1 billion in the 2016-17 budget approved earlier this month. “This bill is about increasing transparency and accountability so the public can have a sense of what improvements they might see in their own communities as a result of taxpayer funded capital projects,” bill sponsor Assemblywoman Nily Rozic, D-Queens, said April 18.
