Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail on the brownfield remediation project underway on Water Street in Catskill. More than three months after it began, Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation, which is managing the project and footing the projected $5-million bill, has moved from the investigative stage to the initial clean-up process. According to the DEC, the area is the site of two former gas manufacturing facilities sitting directly on the Catskill Creek. Contamination includes coal tar. Levels of contaminants, including several PAH compounds, were detected in the creek sediment. The subsurface soil and sediment contamination has resulted in significant threat to the environment. Two large drills now dominate the site, boring into the bank to set footers for one of two concrete walls that will stabilize the area throughout the dredging process. One wall along the creek will hold the water back during the land-based portion of the dredging, which will remove about 16 to 18 feet of contaminated soil from around the Union Mills building. The wall will also stabilize the bank during the dredging to remove up to 10 feet from the creek bed. The project is expected to continue through early summer 2013.
