Catskill village waging war against garbage

Jul 23, 2020 6:00 am
Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Catskill Police have increased their patrols at Dutchman's Landing following an increase in littering complaints at the park. The combined impact of summer weather and COVID-19 restrictions have escalated park usage, as well as recent improvements at the park, such as the repaving of the parking lot. The litter volume is also larger. Village police made an arrest July 21, for illegal dumping. “This morning an arrest was made in Dutchman’s Landing with the help of a concerned citizen and a village trustee who contacted the police department when they witnessed the violation,” according to the police department. “It is only with the help of our community [that] we can make our village a safe and beautiful place to live.” That same day, the police department also issued a warning about littering at Dutchman’s Landing and Elliott Park. “The village board, members of the police department and Department of Public Works will start to monitor the parks and public areas for violations. ... We are asking for the support of the entire community in keeping these areas neat and clean,...” according to a police statement. Village President Vincent Seeley called for a community-wide effort to tackle the problem. “...[I]f you see a piece of garbage on the ground, pick it up and throw it out,” he said. The park has two trash receptacles near the Galley building, which are emptied by the Department of Public Works on Mondays and monitored throughout the week.
