Voters approve Selkirk firehouse bonds

Oct 19, 2020 5:30 am
Melanie Lekocevic is reporting for Capital Region Independent Media voters in the Selkirk fire district October 6, overwhelmingly approved two bond measures totaling $11.8 million for the construction of a new firehouse and renovation of another. Out of the 700 voters participating, 500 supported the propositions, while 209 voted "no." “On behalf of the Board of Fire Commissioners and all of the volunteer firefighters of the Selkirk Fire District, I would like to thank the residents of the district for supporting this project,” said Chuck Wickham, chairman of the Selkirk Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners. The project will not require a tax increase, fire department officials said. The plan calls for the construction of a new firehouse on Route 9W near A.W. Becker Elementary School, to replace the existing Selkirk firehouse, as well as improvements to the Glenmont fire station. The last time the district built a firehouse was in 1965. The plan approved this month is a scaled-down version of a $17.5 million proposal rejected by the voters in 2018. Construction is slated to begin in the spring. The new Route 9W firehouse could be finished by mid-2022. Read the full story in The Ravena News-Herald.
