Steve Hughes is reporting for the Times Union three organizations have taken legal action over the so-called Boss Bill, a law intended to stop employers from discriminating against employees over reproductive health decisions. The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, CompassCare Pregnancy Services and the First Bible Baptist Church of Rochester, filed the lawsuit against the state last week. The plaintiffs argue the law is a remedy for a non-existent problem and that its requirements are in conflict with their religious beliefs, thereby violating their civil rights. The bill is, “a transparent attempt to meddle in the affairs of religious and pro-life organizations …, " the plaintiffs allege. The Boss Bill was signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and it “provide[s] essential protections for women’s health and guarantee their fundamental right to make reproductive choices that are best for them and their families,” said the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Jen Metzger, in a statement when the bill was approved in January. The measure was first introduced in 2014 in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s Burwell versus Hobby Lobby Stores decision, which allows some for-profit corporations to be exempt from a regulation its owners object to due to their religious beliefs.
