Berne GOP challenges two ballots in an election decided by one
Nov 25, 2017 12:09 am
Amanda Fries reports in the Albany Times Union that Berne Republicans filed papers Nov. 20 with state Supreme Court to keep two absentee ballots from counting in an election that is currently at 617- 616. Republican Frank Brady leads Democratic challenger Joel Willsey by one vote for a Town Board seat. Republican Committee Chairman Randy Bashwinger, who is also Berne’s highway superintendent, doesn't want the Albany County Board of Elections to open those ballots, and potentially change the outcome of the election. Bashwinger said, "we’ve never really check[ed]" the absentee ballots before, but this year he wants to. Berne Democratic Committee Chairman Gerald O'Malley brought in ten votes to election officials, two more than allowed in a 2004 court case. A new judge will decide if that court ruling still applies.
