Kinderhook village, Samascott amend land sale agreement
Nov 06, 2018 1:00 pm
Logan Weiss is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the village of Kinderhook and Samascott Orchards have amended the proposed purchase agreement that will give the village ownership of land currently owned by the orchard. The village is buying the land from Samascott for the development of the Hudson River Valley Greenway Albany-Hudson Electric Trail, which will be routed through the village. “Initially, they were only going to take 25 feet for the width of the trail,” Kinderhook Mayor James C. Dunham said. “But they now need 40 feet.” But the orchard owners did not want to sell 40 feet of land. They were concerned about the deer fences placed along the property to protect the orchards. Dunham said the 25-foot strip was revised, and they met the design standards. With the changes, an agreement was reached. “I was always supportive of the trail coming to Kinderhook,” said Jake Samascott, owner and operator of Samascott Orchards. “We are excited to help anyway we can.” Once the village acquires the land, trail construction will begin in the spring of 2019.
