Fire engulfs Athens pizzeria

Nov 02, 2020 2:15 pm
Bill Williams is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media a fast-moving fire tore through Stella’s Pizzeria II in Athens late November 1. Stella’s confirmed the loss in a statement that night. “Unfortunately we are sad to say that we lost Stella’s in Athens tonight due to a fire. Thanks for all our clientele who help support us, we are so sorry,” according to the statement. At about 6:33 p.m. the Athens, West Athens, Catskill and Coxsackie fire companies were dispatched to 6 S. Water Street after receiving reports the building was on fire. Arriving firefighters reported the building was fully involved and flames were coming through the roof. The building was not occupied at the time — the restaurant closes at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Greene County Paramedics and Catskill Ambulance treated several firefighters; the nature of their injuries remains unknown. Water Street, 2nd and 3rd streets in the area near the fire were closed to motorists and pedestrians. Central Hudson Gas and Electric was called in to disconnect power to the building. The fire was extinguished around 7:40 p.m. The Greene County Fire Investigation Team is investigating the origin of the blaze. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
