Stewart's says its farmers are not dumping milk

Michael Williams is reporting for the Times Union despite the lowered demand that caused a glut of milk statewide, Stewart's Shops says its farmers are working without having to waste. Each of the 25 farmers who supply the Ballston Spa-based convenience store chain with milk and ice cream work exclusively with the company, said Adam Seybolt, Stewart's head of manufacturing. They have not seen the same drop in demand as the farmers who supply restaurants and schools. The company has taken steps to ease the burden faced by its farmers by increasing competitive premiums and cutting its hauling charges, effective for May. The chain also announced it was decreasing the price of all gallons and half-gallons of milk by 10 cents. "...[W]e are pleased that we are in a position to offer savings to our customers and relief to our dairy producers during these uncertain times,” Stewart's President Gary Dake said in a statement. According to the company, it has seen a nearly 20 percent growth in sales of its dairy products since the pandemic forced people inside in early March. Read the full story in the Times Union.
