Governor
Andrew Cuomo (winner)
Cynthia Nixon
At 9:30 p.m., [Sep. 13] the Associated Press called the election for Cuomo. Cuomo won roughly 65 percent to 34 percent for his opponent. Nixon called Cuomo to concede. In a concession speech, she said, "In our campaign, we took on one of the most powerful governors and it wasn't easy." Cuomo stayed home in Albany on Election Night. He has been avoiding reporters for two days. Nixon nearly doubled the amount of votes Zephyr Teachout got in a primary against Cuomo in 2014, and her vote total would have beaten his that year too. But Cuomo also got more votes this year, as turnout was much higher. There were more than 1.1 million votes cast in 2018 in this primary compared to about 570,000 in 2014. Green Party candidate and Republican Dutchess County Executive face Cuomo on the November ballot.
