Emilia Teasdale is reporting for The Columbia Paper the Ichabod Crane Board of Education at a public meeting in early March, approved a motion critical of its member Jeffery Ouellette. Ouellette, during a policy committee meeting in January, made a statement critical of a district student. The student’s mother alleged the comment suggested her son was using drugs. According to the board motion, Ouellette made the remarks during a committee discussion about a student serving as non-voting member of the board. The “...statements were heard by members of the public and were brought to the attention of the student Mr. Ouellette was discussing,” according to the board statement. The student’s mother said her son was “defamed and was insulted," and his family has asked that Ouellette resign. Board President Matthew Nelson said at the meeting that he did not give the board “an advance reading” of the motion, and it was not included on the meeting agenda. The board discussed the legal issues involved with removing aboard member,. It was learned the process is adversarial and would involve the state Education Commissioner, but the 30-day deadline for action has passed, Nelson said. “We have all asked our fellow board member to step down,” he said. Ouellette did not comment at the meeting, and later told a reporter he would not comment on a non-agenda item. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.
