Lawmakers okay snow shoveling cost

Mar 18, 2020 12:45 pm
Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Greene County Legislature Public Safety Committee March 16, approved an expenditure of $8,700 for the cost of hand-shoveling snow at the county jail construction site in Coxsackie. Officials previously rejected a similar resolution in the amount of $9,500. The measure as approved provides for payment to James H. Maloy, of Loudonville, for hand shoveling snow from 35,000 to 45,000 square feet. Athens representative Ed Bloomer originally voted no on the proposal, but changed his position. “I found out [shoveling] was purposely left out of the bid specs,” Bloomer said. “If it had been put in, it would have been a $60,000 item.” Instead, the contractors opted to charge for shoveling on an as-needed basis, he said. “If I had that information in the first place, I would have voted differently in the first round,” Bloomer said. In other jail news, Greenville representative Greg Davis said the contractors were delayed in getting a roof on the building. “They expected to have the roof on by the end of November,” Davis said. The project was delayed in the spring while lawmakers were waiting for answers on the legality of sharing jails with other counties, he said. The county jail project is funded by a $39 million bond from Robert W. Baird and Co. at 2.49 percent interest and an $8.1 million contribution from the county. The county expects to open the facility in July 2021. Read the story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
