Antonio Delgado has signed on as a co-sponsor of a bill introduced in the last three Congresses that would eliminate the ban on the use of Medicaid funds for abortions. That ban was established by Hyde Amendment in 1976, and has remained in place ever since. Delgado, a Rhinebeck Democrat, argued in a press release announcing the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance Act, that the measure would end discrimination against uninsured low-income women for abortions because they are enrolled in Medicaid. “Women have a Constitutional right in our country to make their own decisions about their health care, including abortion,” Delgado said. “But the Hyde Amendment effectively denies that right, so that only women who can afford to access their right to an abortion can do so...” The bill has 92 co-sponsors, including Delgado, Sean Patrick Maloney and a dozen other New Yorkers. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and nine other Democrats are sponsoring the Senate version.
