Gowanus Mix

Gowanus Mix stems from a series of canoe rides undertaken on the Gowanus Canal – a heavily polluted industrial waterway in Brooklyn, New York. The sounds collected while navigating have been filtered, condensed – and freely remixed. All the sounds you hear spring from the material recorded in the canoe, yet the piece does not document a particular moment or situation. Rather, it provides a moving sound image of a place. In its reliance on listening to existing sounds and on their capture, as well as in its quiet length and its Mix title, Gowanus Mix is a warm, quiet homage to John Cage, and to the ways in which he taught us to listen. It is as well an exercise in the ordinary pleasures of being alive.
