Albany mayor, former council president to endorse Toporowski

Steve Hughes is reporting for the Times Union Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan and former Common Council President Carolyn McLaughlin are expected to endorse Matt Toporowski in the Democratic primary for district attorney over incumbent David Soares. Toporowski is an attorney and previously worked in Soares' office. He has run a campaign promising to be a more progressive chief prosecutor, pushing for criminal justice reforms at the state level and instituting more diversion programs in the DA's office. His campaign has out-raised Soares by nearly 2-to-1. Toporowski was previously endorsed by the Working Families Party, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, former progressive candidate Zephyr Teachout and singer John Legend. Soares is seeking a fifth term in office, campaigning on the message of measured reforms while protecting communities. He has been endorsed by the county's Democratic committee and local politicians include Sheriff Craig Apple and Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy. The Democratic primary is June 23.
