Berkshire Union Free School District prepares to close

May 18, 2020 2:45 pm
Jeanette Wolfberg is reporting for The Columbia Paper on preparations underway to dissolve the Berkshire Union Free School District by June 30. The closure will impact the Warren Street Street Academy in Hudson, and the junior/senior high school in Canaan. The decision to close came after the Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth decided to end its residential treatment program. A significant portion of the special school district’s students were drawn from that program, and losing them “directly impacts our ability to function,” said Dan Kalbfleish, principal of the Warren Street Academy. The Farm Center’s residential facilities are now slated to house student-age refugees. The Warren Street Academy, also known as The Bridge, opened to students in 2014. Currently, 53 students are enrolled, including 16 seniors. Warren Street Academy seniors who meet graduation requirements will receive diplomas from their home districts, he said. The remaining students will be transferred to other programs in the region. School officials also want to give teachers the time to look for new jobs. Only the Berkshire Union Free School District is closing. While the Farm Center will end its Residential Treatment Center it will continue its other programs, including foster care, prevention, group homes, non-secure detention, and secure detention.
