On Sunday morning, October 22, 1995, Fidel Castro was invited to address the General Assembly at the United Nations on the occasion of its 50th anniversary in 1995. Castro wore a nice suit instead of his usual military fatigues, and he kept his address to six minutes. In the evening he would arrive at the Abyssinian Church in Harlem to address the capacity crowd of 1,300 people, crammed shoulder to shoulder to hear this revolutionary leader speak. Prefacing the speech, we share a short excerpt from Castro's first address to the United Nations in 1960. Here Castro outlines the living conditions for most Cubans under the previous Batista dictatorship in Cuba.
