January snowfall total, according to the National Weather Service out of Albany, was 34.4 inches for our region — 13.4 inches short of the record set in 1987. A normal January snowfall is 18 inches, according to the weather service. Harvey said the overtime budget for highway personnel was slightly above normal but he believed everything should balance out by season’s end, according to the story. "Unlike major metropolitan areas around the Northeast and Midwest, Greene County seems to be in good shape budget-wise this winter. In places like New York City, Harvey said one of the major challenges is removing snow from sidewalks." Supplies of sand and salt remain in good order, Harvey added, though they are being consumed quickly. “We’re slightly over our average but we’ll be OK.” In Catskill, village Department of Public Works Superintendent Lewis O’Connor also said he is still within budget.
