Vandals trash Copake Memorial Park

Diane Valden is reporting in the Columbia Paper Copake town officials are describing the vandalism at Copake Memorial Park over the 4th of July holiday weekend as "horrific." The damage was done to the park bathrooms, located between the activity building and the playground. On the following Monday, the director of the town’s summer recreation program arrived to find that someone had also defaced the concrete floor of the park pavilion with red spray paint. Town council member Kelly Miller-Simmons, the liaison to the Copake Parks and Recreation Commission, said a formal police report was not filed immediately. Town officials intend to review footage from the park surveillance cameras to first see what was recorded, she said. However, the incident was informally reported to the resident sheriff's deputy. Similar incidents occur once or twice a year at the park, Copake Town Supervisor Jeffrey Nayer said. The park is open daily from dawn to dusk. Numerous private residences, Camp Waubeeka and the Taconic Shores housing development border the park. “It could have been anybody,” Miller-Simmons said. Read the full story in the Columbia Paper.
