Emilia Teasdale is reporting for The Columbia Paper the Ichabod Crane Board of Education April 16, adopted its $41.6 million 2019-20 budget. The spending plan will be presented to the voters May 21. In addition to the annual budget, voters will be asked to approve the spending of $476,000 for five school buses. Eight candidates are vying for three open seats on the board. Also at the meeting, the board heard from attorney Jay Girvin, who answered board questions about how to deal with the situation surrounding Superintendent Michael Vanyo's current status. Vanyo was arrested and accused of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident in Saratoga County, April 6. Vanyo subsequently requested he be put on unpaid leave from his school duties and designated Assistant Superintendent Suzanne Guntlow to take over as acting superintendent. Girvin told the board that as a result of Vanyo’s employment contract he would have full due process rights. He said if the board decides to move forward with a hearing to dissolve that contract, Vanyo would have to be presented with the charges in writing, and an arbitrator would be hired for the proceeding. The decision of the arbitrator would be binding. Vanyo is due in Walton Town Court April 29, to address the status of his driver's license. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.
