Lawrence discusses tax costs of jail

Oct 13, 2018 12:31 am
The Greenville Pioneer prints numbers that Legislator William Lawrence (R-Cairo), chairman of the Public Safety Committee and the biggest backer of building a new jail in Coxsackie says reflect how much taxes will go up because of the project. On average, Greene County residents can expect a 6.73 percent tax increase next year because of the most expensive construction project in county history. The tax increases are very similar across the county with Windham residents facing the lowest increase, 6.48 percent, and Ashland getting the largest increase, at 6.91 percent. Lawrence also reports in the paper that Greene County is looking to lease temporary space during construction of the new jail for both the Sheriff’s office and inmate processing. The county, Lawrence says, also has not determined yet what it will ultimately do with the former Catskill jail site. Read the full story in The Greenville Pioneer.
