Joshua Pietzold is reporting for CBS6 Albany Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced May 1, schools and colleges in New York will remain closed through the end of the academic year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Schools have been closed since March. Since then, schools have been engaged in remote learning techniques to continue classes. The governor says schools will still be required to execute meal provision plans, as well as assist in child care options for essential workers. Schools and colleges will be required to come up with plans to eventually reopen in ways that do not put students and essential workers at risk. Those plans will require state approval before they can be carried out. A decision on in-person attendance at summer schools will be made in late May. Cuomo said it is not yet clear when a decision will be made on the 2020-21 academic year, which officially begins July 1. When asked why regional re-openings are not being considered for schools, Cuomo said it would be too difficult for schools to come up with safety plans in just a few weeks, with so little time left in the academic year.
