Ballot counting underway in Ulster County

Nov 19, 2019 1:30 pm
Patricia Doxsey is reporting for the Daily Freeman the task of counting absentee and affidavit ballots is now underway at the Ulster County Board of Elections. By midday November 18, elections officials had finished counting the ballots filed by voters in Legislature District 1 and most of District 2. Officials expected to complete counting the ballots in District 2 and District 3 by the end of the day. Republican DA candidate Michael J. Kavanagh and Democrat David Clegg were separated by just three votes on election night. After paper ballots were tallied in his hometown of Saugerties Monday, Kavanagh held a slight edge. However, with more than 1,500 ballots from Woodstock, where Clegg lives, as well as the heavily Democratic city of Kingston, left to count, the final outcome is still up in the air. The winner of the race will replace Republican Holley Carnright, who chose not to run again. Control of the Ulster County Legislature also rests on the count, where races in three of the 22 districts were too close to call on election night two weeks ago. Board of Elections officials hope to have all absentee ballots counted by Mon., Nov. 25. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
