Cuomo announces tax credit for farmers' food donations

Jan 30, 2018 2:30 pm
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Jan. 30 a tax credit for New York farmers making food donations to food banks and other emergency food programs beginning this year. New York farmers could save a up to $10 million annually under the program. Last year, the New York Farm Bureau said state farmers donated more than nine million pounds of food. "This administration is committed to stomping out hunger in every corner of New York, and by establishing an incentive to increase access to farm-fresh products, we are one step closer to this goal," Cuomo said. "Refunding farmers for their generous food donations not only supports the state's agricultural economy, but encourages more New Yorkers to help end hunger in our communities once and for all." Farmers get a refundable credit equal to 25 percent of the fair market value of qualified donations of fruits and vegetables up to $5,000 in the program.
