Patricia R. Doxsey reports in the Daily Freeman that Republicans and Democrats in the Ulster County Legislature are agreeing on legislation that would stop appointed county employees, including those working for the Ulster County Board of Elections, from holding elected positions in a town, village, or city government. Republican Minority Leader Ken Ronk sponsored the bill with Saugerties Democrat Joseph Maloney. Currently, Deputy Assistant County Executive Dan Torres is also a New Paltz Town Board member and deputy supervisor. Republican Ronk said a county employee who oversees grant or other municipal funding could direct funds to projects in their town. "Those fiduciary conflicts happen behind closed doors," Ronk said. "There’s no sunlight penetrating." The bill will be considered at the Legislature's Aug. 12 Laws and Rules, Governmental Services Committee meeting. Read more about this story in the Daily Freeman.
