Dutchess lawmakers to consider creating redistricting commission
May 14, 2019 9:00 am
MidHudsonNews [dot] com is reporting the Dutchess County Legislature will consider creating an independent commission for redistricting. If approved, Local Law #2 of 2019 would alter the Dutchess County Charter and would establish the commission to oversee the redrawing of the county's legislative districts. Assistant Minority Leader Kristofer Munn, a Democrat, said he supports the idea. “An independent redistricting commission that would separate drawing of the lines of the legislature from the legislators themselves, preventing politicians from picking their voters rather than voters picking their politicians,” he said. The commission would consist of seven members, two each picked by the majority and minority party leaders. Those four would pick three more members. County officials and employees and political party leaders would be excluded from the commission. The proposed measure will be discussed at the legislature's June meeting. If approved by lawmakers, a referendum would be placed on the November general election ballot. Read the full story at MidHudsonNews [dot] com.
