Andrea Macko is reporting for Porcupine Soup town of Cairo officials are weighing what can be done about an alleged nuisance property in Acra. At the March 17 town board meeting, Supervisor John Coyne read a letter from a local resident making a complaint about the former Lang's Grove Side at 6047 State Route 23. Coyne did not publicly identify the complainant, but read the letter aloud. The resident described the old resort, currently used as apartments, as a “fire hazard” that is “unfit for anyone to live.” Coyne called it "...a terrible situation,” noting the town’s code enforcement department had already paid the location a visit. “I think now the board needs to look at the laws that we have on the books and try to address some of the things that are up there. This particular location is, I’ll say, a nuisance to the town,” he said. Cairo's public nuisance abatement law, adopted in 2016, defines public nuisance as a variety of actions, ranging from code violations to criminal activity. The law allows the town to take the property owner to court to seek fines or even close the property down. According to county tax records, 6047 State Route 23 is owned by Paffi and Rich Lakshmi Trinity, Inc. A second company, Paffi Laxmi II, Inc., is also associated with the property. Concerns with crime at the Acra apartments was expressed by town board members. “They have had a couple of deaths due to drugs and they have had quite a few [overdoses] there,” said board member Steve Kralovich. Board member Jason Watts asked if the police presence could be increased in the area. Kralovich confirmed the town code enforcement officer was there in the beginning of the year but “didn’t get far.” He said, “The place is so illegal it isn’t even funny.” Coyne said, “We need to do something.” The supervisor has been in contact with town attorney Tal Rappleyea about various legal options.
