Ken Lovett is reporting for the Daily News under the gun control package set to be approved by state lawmakers this week, teachers would be banned from carrying guns in school. Following the school shooting in Parkland, Fla. last year, President Donald Trump and the NRA called for teachers and school staff to be armed. Vice News recently reported that at least 466 districts across the country adopted policies to allow it. Right now if a school district in New York wants to arm its personnel, it can. Supporters of arming teachers say it would allow them to protect students if a shooting erupts in school. However state Sen. Todd Kaminsky, from Nassau County, says most teachers do not want to roam the halls looking for active shooters. “Teachers I talk to just want to teach,” he said. Kaminsky said under the proposed law, districts could still have armed security in the schools if they want. The state Senate and Assembly are set to take up an expansive gun control package, Jan. 29, that includes expanding the timeline for background checks on gun purchases flagged for further review to 30 days from the current three, and a so-called red flag bill allowing family members, school officials and law enforcement to petition a judge to take guns away from people they believe pose an extreme risk to themselves or others and more. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, who has criticized President Trump and congressional Republicans for wanting to roll back gun control measures, is expected to sign the bills.
