Cuomo pushes lawmakers to pass special prosecutor law

Denis Slattery is reporting for the New York Daily News Gov. Andrew Cuomo is threatening to terminate the executive order that gave the state attorney general the responsibility of investigating police killings. The governor urged lawmakers June 3 to pass legislation that would fully fund a separate office to probe police-related deaths of unarmed civilians. “That executive order was a temporary measure," Cuomo said. "Until we can pass a real bill, the executive order is done by the authority of the governor, but it dies with the governor. I fall over, bing, have a heart attack today, that goes away.” Cuomo took action in 2015, removing local district attorneys from investigating and prosecuting police officers who kill unarmed civilians, and placing that power in the hands of the state attorney general. The governor said at the time that the setup was only temporary and called on the Legislature to pass a law making the measure permanent. Read the full story in the New York Daily News.
