Employment in region a mix of gains and losses in 2016
The Daily Freeman is reporting counties in the Mid-Hudson Valley and Catskills experienced a mix of job gains and losses in 2016, according to data released Thu., Jan. 19, by the state Department of Labor. Columbia County lost 200 nonfarm jobs to finish the year at 21,900. Greene County was unchanged at 15,000. While the state-designated Kingston Metro Area, which includes all of Ulster County, saw gains in nonfarm jobs, Dutchess and Putnam counties reported a loss of 100 nonfarm jobs. Statewide New York added 102,700 nonfarm jobs in 2016, for a total of just under 9.5 million, the labor office said. The state’s private sector added more than 98,000 positions last year. The state unemployment rate in December was 4.9 percent, compared to 5.1 percent a month earlier and 5 percent a year earlier. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
