Jimmy Vielkind in Capital New York reports that Governor Andrew Cuomo hopes to discuss the state's email retention policy May 23. Cuomo promised a summit on the issue March 12, as state lawmakers were writing bills to change a state policy that automatically deletes employee emails after 90 days. “I have not been notified of any change in policy or announcements about this,” State Senator Liz Krueger, a Democrat from Manhattan who sponsors a bill to mandate preservation of all emails for seven years, said April 29. “Clearly, the governor could do something about this through his own internal process. But this is one of many examples of why we have a legislative process that leads to structures and laws.” Cuomo claims he inherited the policy from former governor Eliot Spitzer, but Spitzer aides say it was limited to the governor's closest aides, and messages were backed up on tapes.
