Bond resolution to fund new county jail withdrawn until February

Daniel Zuckerman is reporting in The Daily Mail a resolution that would have authorized $52 million in bonds to fund the construction of a new Greene County Jail was withdrawn before the county Legislature meeting Wed., Jan. 18. The measure will be placed on the Public Safety Committee's agenda and presented to the full Legislature in February, Jail Committee Chairman William Lawrence said. The decision was made to afford lawmakers more time to discuss various matters, Lawrence said. "I want to give them one more opportunity to make up their mind. Anyway you look at it, Greene County will be paying for inmates," he said. Legislator Matthew Luvera was surprised when he heard the resolution was withdrawn. "I was ready to say a lot last night," the Catskill Republican said Thursday. Luvera intended to vote against the bond resolution, based on data and input from meetings, he said. Luvera previously met with Greene County Administrator Shaun Gordon to explain his rationale for why the jail should contain no more than 100 beds and there should be alternatives in place of incarceration, he said. Luvera, along with legislators Michael Bulich, Lori Torgersen and Aidan O’Connor have been critical of certain aspects of the proposed jail. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.
