Feb 11, 2021 1:45 pm

Andrea Macko is reporting for Porcupine Soup the town of Durham will hold a public forum Thu., Feb. 11, to discuss police reform. The forum is part of the process that began statewide in June following an executive order from Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo requiring local governments with a police department to adopt a reform plan by April 1. Cuomo said in that order, “Each community must envision for itself the appropriate role of the police. Policies must be developed to allow the police to do their jobs to protect the public and these policies must meet with the local communities' acceptance.” In a letter to the community, Town Supervisor and Police Commissioner Shawn Marriott called for Durham residents to join the reform committee to "...discuss the Durham Police Department, what it means to our town, and what we can do to improve community relations.” He said the Reform Committee was taking suggestions from residents and "forming a draft plan to implement changes...” The committee members are Marriott, Matt Hausmann, Brenna Rustick, John Quirk, Patty Handel and Tom Sutton. The public is encouraged to attend either in person at Cairo-Durham High School or virtually by calling 503-300-6830 and entering the code 114503 when prompted. The meeting will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.,Thu., Feb. 11. Read the full story at pocupinesoup [dot] com.
