Wendy Liberatore is reporting for the Times Union the College of St. Rose announced December 8, it will end 16 bachelor degree, six master degree and three certificate programs. The news came after the private, independent college in Albany made $8 million in cuts to the school's administration and staff. Programs in art, music, math, science, education and business will be lost in an effort to save $5.97 million. Students currently enrolled in these programs will be able to finish their degrees, but new students will be unable to enroll in the programs. “These decisions are necessary to the long-term future of Saint Rose and come as part of a series of difficult choices we have had to make this year in order to have a balanced budget by 2023,” wrote Interim President Marcia White on the school's website. The decision will impact 10 percent of undergraduate students and 4 percent of the graduate students enrolled in the college's 109 programs. Many of the programs at the college have declining or historically low enrollment. Others were eliminated because the cost to maintain them was higher than the revenue they generated. The program closures will eliminate 33 of the college’s 151 full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty positions in December 2021, and eight full-time visiting faculty contracts will not be renewed. White noted the affected programs represented a significant part of the college's history, but said "sadly, after much thought and extensive analysis, we have made the determination that we can no longer afford to maintain them."
