Andrea Macko reports for Porcupine Soup that 97-year-old Enrico Formica of Athens was named Greene County's Veteran of the Year. Sgt. Enrico “Ed” Formica was honored Nov. 4 at a special ceremony at Catskill Point. Formica served mostly in Europe, but later in the Pacific theater, in World War II. Annmarie Krause, Formica’s daughter, said, “He knew in his heart that he needed to serve his country. And so, he did." Formica got the WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Philippine Independence Medal for his service. Formica was also this year’s grand marshal in the Athens Memorial Day Parade. Read more about this story in Porcupine Soup.
