Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media Greene County lawmakers August 17, awarded the contract to demolish the historic building that formerly housed the county jail to Jackson Demolition Service Inc. of Schenectady. The bid submitted by Jackson totaled $344,431; an additional $70,253 will be paid to the company for the removal of the Ohio sandstone from the exterior of the building. The resolution was approved by the Public Safety and Finance committees. Finance Committee chair, Coxsackie representative Charles Martinez, said prior to the vote, “We’re all going to get voted out.” The comment was greeted by laughter from several lawmakers. County Deputy Administrator Warren Hart said in 2019 that renovation of the building would be cost-prohibitive. “Rehabilitation of the buildings is not economically feasible given the substantial cost of remediation,” Hart said. “There are no other alternatives that meets the county’s needs.” The building site will now become a parking lot and/or new office space will be constructed. Demolition estimates came in at about half of the $800,000 budgeted by the county for the project. In all, 12 bids were submitted for consideration.
