Hudson teachers looking to show R-rated films

Nov 19, 2019 1:15 pm
Jeanette Wolfberg is reporting for The Columbia Paper two Hudson High School Spanish teachers appealed to the Board of Education, November 5, for permission to show R-rated films in their classes. The teachers said the films portray locales where the Spanish is spoken and “the students get interested” in them. “You have to have a plan in place to allow students to opt-out” without adverse consequences, said board member Linda Hopkins. Superintendent Maria Suttmeier agreed. “There would have to be a way for students who opt-out to learn the material without seeing the film,” she said. Furthermore, added Hopkins, with a district's commitment to advancing the social-emotional development of its students, “we’re concerned about the emotional impact” of such films on under-college-age children. Suttmeier said permission to show the films would have to come from the board. The following day, one of the teachers, speaking with a reporter by phone, said the films “are all from Spanish-speaking countries and shown in Spanish.” She further noted there would be no problem editing out potentially objectionable scenes that are not relevant to the course work.
