Toporowski concedes Albany County DA race

Jul 08, 2020 1:45 pm
Robert Gavin is reporting for the Times Union Matthew Toporowski late July 7, conceded the Albany County district attorney Democratic primary to incumbent David Soares, thereby ending a progressive campaign backed by Mayor Kathy Sheehan, activist Barbara Smith and others. The 34-year-old Toporowski, an attorney in private practice and former prosecutor, said in an email he called Soares to congratulate him. “Today I conceded in the race for Albany County DA, and I did so standing tall, proud and with a smile on my face. I have over 14,000 reasons to feel that way because that's how many people voted for me as a first-time candidate,” Toporowski stated. While there are some ballots left to count, Toporowski no longer has a mathematical chance to win, election officials said. Toporowski received the support of the county’s Working Families Party. He said while his name will appear on the ballot in November on that line, he will no longer campaign. Soares also has the Independence Party line. There is no Republican candidate, which effectively ensures Soares’ re-election to a fifth term. Read the full story in the Times Union.
