Governor urges New Yorkers to get the flu shot

Jan 19, 2018 7:00 am

Rick Karlin is reporting at Capitol Confidential following a week when the number of flu cases statewide increased by 54 percent and more than 1,600 New Yorkers were hospitalized with the illness, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo is urging anyone who has not yet done so to get a flu shot immediately. The variation of the virus making the rounds this year is especially virulent and widespread. In a statement released January 18, the governor noted that Central New York and the Capital Region are some of the hardest-hit parts of the state. “Influenza is a potentially deadly disease, and getting vaccinated is the best thing New Yorkers can do to protect themselves and those around them, followed by good hand hygiene,” said New York State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker. "...I urge all New Yorkers to get vaccinated immediately.” According to the Centers for Disease Control, vaccination should continue throughout flu season, as long as influenza viruses are circulating. To receive a flu shot, contact your local health care provider or pharmacy, or find information about vaccination clinics by contacting your local health department. The Columbia County Department of Health can be contacted at (518) 828-3358; the Greene County Public Health Department can be reached at (518) 719-3600.
