Poll shows wide support for criminal justice reforms

David Lombardo is reporting for Capitol Confidential a survey commissioned by New Yorkers United for Justice has found that the newly adopted criminal justice laws are popular with New York voters. The advocacy group released the poll October 24, to encourage state lawmakers to continue addressing parole reform, pretrial protections and other reforms. New Yorkers United for Justice is also in the process of an aggressive campaign to convince Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to increase the use of his clemency powers. “We’ve taken historic steps to address the injustices in our system this year,” United for Justice senior advisor Topeka K. Sam said. “We are here for the long haul and we must continue to pass reforms to make our state safer and more just next session.” The poll was conducted by HarrisX in late August.
