Poll finds voters favor the idea of a Constitutional Convention
Matthew Hamilton is reporting at Capitol Confidential a Siena College poll released Thu., Jun. 30, found that 68 percent of voters statewide support the idea of a state Constitutional Convention. The convention would allow the people to propose changes to the state Constitution, which the voters would eventually approve or reject. But while the majority polled said they approve of the convention idea, the majority said in reality they know little about it, 16 months before they would be asked to weigh in officially. Voters statewide will decide in 2017 if they want the Constitutional Convention process to be triggered. They would then have to vote again on Election Day 2018 to select delegates. And the convention would be held in April 2019, with voters likely to decide on any amendments to come out of the convention on Election Day 2019. Hamilton writes that special interests have not ramped up their campaigns either in support of, or against a convention. And that while government-reform groups are likely to support the idea of using a convention to do something like close the LLC loophole, unions are likely to be some of the biggest opponents.
