Gibson votes yes, House votes no on Farm Bill

Jun 21, 2013 12:02 am
Pete Kasperowicz, Erik Wasson and Russell Berman in The Hill report that the U.S. House of Representatives voted down their version of the 2013 Farm Bill 234 against to 195 for Thu., June 20, with local representative Chris Gibson (R-Kinderhook) voting for the bill. After Republicans cut $20 billion in food stamps funds from the $940 billion five-year bill, "Agriculture Committee ranking member Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) said they could not produce that many [votes] because of pressure from Democratic leaders and the White House, which had threatened to veto the bill," The Hill trio reported. Chief Republican vote-counter, Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), implied they now planned to make the bill more conservative, as 62 Republicans voted against this version. "We can correct it if [Democrats] are not going to help us," he said after the vote. Read the full story in The Hill.
