Cairo will address abandoned sign

Daniel Zuckerman reports for Columbia-Greene Media that the Town of Cairo has a law against abandoned business signs, but has at least one on Route 23. Bernard Rivers, of Cornwallville, sent the town a letter recently to make sure they know that nothing is being done about it and broken glass or plastic work around the edges could make it dangerous. “It conveyed this is run down and no one was bothered to clean it up,” Rivers said. “I thought that would be an easy fix.” Instead of taking action, town officials talked about the sign at the Nov. 5 town meeting. Town Councilperson Mary Jo Cords explained why Cairo officials did not know about the sign. “When we pass it every day, after a while, you don’t see it, so it’s good to have some fresh eyes like this person who wrote the letter to point these things out,” Cords said. “It’s just unsightly.” Officials at the meeting said Town Code Enforcement Officer Stacy Sprague will work to get the sign down, per the town's law.
